My third vintage of this wine and for the third time it gets a full 5 hearts. This is the sort of white wine I really enjoy; very aromatic and just a touch off-dry. It harmonises Riesling and Gewurztraminer, two of my favourite grapes, so well and gets the balance just right. The aromas of this wine immediately reveal the classic Gewurztraminer notes or lychee and rose blossoms. There's a lemony note from the Riesling but it's less pronounced. Initially quite ripe fruit flavours on the palate, with a note of apricot, but then the lemony acidity of the Riesling kicks in. Pleasant oily texture to the wine but not creamy/buttery - particularly once the acidity kicks in. This remains a favourite and I'd recommend it to anybody who likes an off-dry white and/or Riesling/Gewurztraminer in general. I'd happily pay the full price for this, getting a bottle in the January sale was a bargain!

One of the things I love about Naked is the chance to try unusual wines from less well-known countries and regions. I was very excited when I saw Naked were stocking Georgian wines and this one is already a favourite of mine. I'm probably in the majority when I say I'm not familiar with the grapes used in this wine. If I were to liken it to a more familiar wine grape, I would say Viognier, which is a favourite of mine. There's a 'ripe' feeling to this wine; aromas of peach and white melon, complimented by blossoms. Peach and melon again on the palate; there's a touch of lemon but it's subtle, as this isn't a particularly acidic wine. I would also guess it's slightly off-dry, as there's a honeyed note to the aftertaste and for a white, it's quite full-bodied and has a juicy fruit aftertaste. This wine has slightly mixed reviews. I suppose if you like your white wine very dry and crisp, this might not be for you. However, if you like an off-dry white, juicy, bordering on tropical, I highly recommend this. It's great to have something that's a bit different - and also very much to my personal taste. At under £10, I would definitely recommend trying this wine.

Ethereo Albarino 2022

I'm a big Albarino fan and this is possibly my favourite. Definitely a wine for the summer; crisp, fruity and refreshing. Plenty of aromas in this wine; lemon peel, blossoms, fresh grass and a slight honeyed note. High in acidity but although quite light in body, there's enough flavour to keep the acidity balanced. Ripe flavours of peach and white melon, with citrus returning in the finish. Not quite as tropical a profile as I remember the last vintage (I recall some pineapple notes) but still a flavoursome balance between crisp and rich flavours. Albarino tends to be a more expensive grape but this one is very reasonably priced. Highly recommended if you're a fan of aromatic whites or if you just feel like trying something new.

Camille Cayran Rasteau Organic 2020

Yet another stunner from Denis Crespo! A little more expensive than I usually go for but it was the monthly freebie. However, I have no issues with buying this again for £13.99. This is a robust and complex red. It has medium-high levels of acid and tannin, plus a 14.5% ABV. It takes a good level of flavour concentration to carry that, and this wine does it and then some. Plenty of aroma in this wine; notes of black cherry, forest fruits and vanilla, with some liquorice developing on the second day. The wine is velvety smooth and full-bodied without being too heavy. Initial flavours of blackberry and vanilla develop into an aftertaste of blueberry and black cherry. I've been trying to rate wines a bit stricter and not give so many 5-heart reviews, but this deserves nothing less. I enjoyed this as much as Denis' Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is twice the price, so I would recommend this to anybody looking to spend just a little more for something special.

Fattori Amarone DOCG 2017

The most expensive bottle of wine I have ever bought, despite being in the January sale - but it was worth it. This is a wine to really treat yourself with, my family and I really enjoyed it over Christmas. It's a wine of intense and complex but very well-balanced flavours. Heed the recommendation to give this wine lots of breathing time (4+ hours) and use a decanter if you have one. It really is a phenomenal wine. Initial aromas were of chocolate and strawberry but then gave way to cherry and vanilla. There was also a honeyed aroma, similar to mead, that you don't often find in red wine. Medium-high acidity is balanced by a full body and very high flavour intensity. Strong oak influences but it's more vanilla than the drier oaky notes. Dried cranberries and raisins in the aftertase make this a good wine for the Christmas season. Long aftertaste, where tart cherry returns. I appreciate not everyone can afford a wine of this price but if you can afford to treat yourself, this is definitely recommended. It's £10 off in the January sale right now, so I just ordered another bottle! It says it can age as far as 2036, so I'm interested to see how a bottle develops after being laid down for a few years.

Landhaus Mayer Grüner Veltliner 2021

I've had a few vintages of this wine now and it doesn't disappoint. Gruner Veltliner seems to be a divisive grape but I'm a fan of it and this wine showcases the grape very well. I get a lot of 'green' aromas from this wine; Granny Smith apples, lime zest and a touch of grass. On the palate, the wine is fresh and crisp but still some fruity notes. Medium-bodied and with fairly high acidity, it leaves a refreshing tingle in the aftertaste. I usually like this wine well-chilled but serve it a little warmer and some riper aromas of stone fruit start to appear. Given it's quite light and crisp, one would think this would be a white for the summer. However, I always find myself saving it for autumn, it seems to work well on a cooler day for me. I used to say this was one of the best wines under a tenner. Sadly, inflation has meant it no longer qualifies but it's still worth the price. A good introduction for anybody wanting to discover Austrian white wine.

Klein Muskateller 2021

My second vintage of this wine; it's a bit different to how I remembered the 2020 but I've very much enjoyed it nonetheless. A very aromatic wine, with pronounced notes of lychee and fresh blossoms, which reminds me of Gewurztraminer. Very different to Gewurz on the palate though, as this is a very acidic wine, with a sharp, lemony aftertatse. Just as well this wine is a bit off-dry, as I don't think I could enjoy this level of acidity without some sweetness to balance it. THe balance is just right though; refreshing acidity with some tropical passion fruit flavour before the lemon notes kick in. Nice to have a lower ABV (10%) option too.

Small and Small Gewurztraminer 2022

I'm a big Gewurztraminer fan; my favourites have historically been Gerd Stepp's and Dom Maxwell's. In my review of a previous vintage of S&S Gewurz, I criticised it for being a bit thin, not having the creamy full-body I associate with Gewurz. I'm not sure if that was the vintage or my individual bottle, but the 2022 definitely doesn't have that issue. On the nose, you can tell this is Gewurz, but not as obviously so as with some others. There's a fresh, floral aroma but it's not as distinctly rose petals like some Gewurz. There's some quite tropical aromas; the classic Gewurz lychee note is there but I'm also getting some white melon. I actually think this smells like a cross between Gewurz and Viognier (another grape I really like). On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and juicy, much improved over the previous bottle I reviewed. There's a ripe, fruity sweetness initially, so I'm presuming the wine is a little off-dry, which I like. Long aftertaste with notes of peaches and cream, a great finish. Very close to giving this 5 hearts. Goes to show it's worth trying a second vintage of a wine; I didn't dislike the first but this one has impressed me way more. Highly recommended to any Gewurz fan or somebody who enjoys an aromatic off-dry white.

A & R Durif Shiraz 2020

The 2019 vintage was one of my favourite wines of last year, so I was very excited for this. Possibly a bit too excited, as there may be an argument that I've opened it too early. The description does recommend waiting 2-5 years (that wasn't the case with the previous vintage), so on first impressions this wine didn't seem quite ready. However, with enough breathing time it turned out to be very enjoyable. Despite 3 hours breathing time, I was underwhelmed at first. The wine felt quite sharp, and lacking the full, fruity flavour I remember from the 2019 vintage. I then read some comments saying this wine is better on the second day, so I put it aside and waited, in fact until the third day. On the third day, the wine was much fuller and more rounded, with a smooth mouthfeel. Aromas of blackberry, cherry and a hint of vanilla. Rich and fruit-driven on the palate; mostly red fruit notes now of cherry and cranberry. A touch dry and earthy in the aftertatse but that's balanced by a sweeter note of vanilla. I didn't love this as much as the 2019 (which I gave 5 hearts) but in the end it showed what a great wine it is. I may get another bottle as it seems this will be even better if laid down for a couple of years to fulfil its potential.

The Feather Pluckers Daughter Pinot Gris 2022

Pinot Gris is a grape I'm a bit indifferent on; the wines are usually fine, but rarely the most memorable whites for me. Hence, I'd overlooked this one until I saw it at the tasting tour last Summer. I'm glad I did, as this has turned out to be a real gem of a wine. Fresh aromas of pears, red apples and hay. A juicy mouthfeel to this wine, not thin like some PG can be. More notes of pear on the palate and a touch of stonefruit in the aftertatse, as well as just a tiny hint of honey. At a not too strong 12% ABV, it's a good afternoon wine; refreshing and easy-drinking but definitely not bland or boring. There are fewer and fewer wines under a tenner thesedays, so this is definitely good value for money. If you've got friends coming round and are looking for a wine that caters to most tastes but has a bit more complexity about it, give this a go.

Stefano di Blasi Bianco Leggermente Appassite 2021

I've had a few vintages of this wine now; I'm torn between this and Vermentino for my favourite of Stefano's whites. It's the sort of white I really like; aromatic, fruity and just a tiny bit off-dry. Best not to over-chill this wine, the aromas develop more once it's been out of the fridge for 10 minutes. The aromas are a mix of floral and lemon notes. On the palate, it has medium-high acidity, which is balanced by being quite a full bodied white, with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Lemon again on the palate but complimented by riper notes of white melon and lychee. The floral and lychee notes give this a feel of a more acidic Gewurztraminer, which is a grape I love. A minerally aftertaste lingers in the finish, meaning there's some quite contrasting flavours to the wine. I do recall previous vintages being a bit more ripe and juicy but I still really enjoyed this one, it remains a favourite.
