About the wine
Mario & Simona's Riserva-quality Montepulciano made to honour old grandfather Panfilo
-
For generations, the di Candilo family have grown grapes in the medieval village of Monte Odorisio in Abruzzo, in the heart of Montepulciano country. This special selection was made to honour old grandfather Panfilo, who was the first to make wines from the family’s grapes.
-
It’s a level up from Mario & Simona’s regular Montepulciano. It’s their really special stuff made from 40 year-old vines, and it only gets made in years when the harvest is top quality. A bureaucratic cock-up means they can’t call it a Riserva as it wasn’t registered in time. But it’s totally Riserva-quality as it meets all the strict rules around quality of fruit and oak ageing.
-
As you hover your nose over the deep, dark glass of wine, you’ll get heaps of ripe blackberry and boysenberry aromas. In the mouth it’s full, ripe and rounded. Juicy black forest gateau fruit flavours dominate, carrying all the way through to the finish. Layered and textured with fine chalky tannins, this classic Monte delivers power and elegance in equal measure.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Mario and Simona di Candilo
- Mario and Simona are born winemakers - the TLC they put into just one bottle is enough to leave most mere mortals needing a good lie down. They are a father and daughter duo who thrive under the pressure of a busy harvest - in fact the whole family rolls up their sleeves to support them, with Simona's two younger sisters and Mario's wife on hand to help run the winery itself.
- With winemaking roots harking back four generations, their drive has been handed down through the years and centres around their love for Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. It's one very small grape that represents a whole lot more for Mario, Simona and their family winery.
- 'The path is never easy. There are many difficulties to face and sometimes the strength is lacking, but the love for this job is greater. Our greatest joys are our customers and seeing their faces smile and appreciate our wines is our greatest achievement.' Mario and Simona, Winemakers
