About the wine
An expertly crafted, authentic Italian red packed full of charm and plush intensity
- Barbera is Piedmont’s oldest and most authentic grape variety, and Serena’s family have been making the best in class for generations.
- The vines are planted in deep, structured red clay soil with a south-west sun exposure. This allows the grapes to reach a full and complete ripening, resulting in a rich purple colour, intense raspberry notes on the nose, and the palate’s mellow quality.
- The name Barbera comes from the mediaeval latin ‘Barberus’, meaning ‘impetuous’ or ‘fearless’ - this distinctively strong and vibrant wine reflects this perfectly.

Serving advice
Best served at 16°C. If you choose to leave your bottle to age for a little while,
be sure to decant before serving, giving the wine an opportunity to open up.
Food match
I personally really enjoy pairing this wine with some
'bollito misto' (a local veal stew) served with some
delicious Piedmonte sauce!

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Serena Cordero
-
Serena’s been delighting Angels for years with the top-shelf Italian wines she makes alongside her dad in Piedmont, like Barolo and Gavi di Gavi. Now, she’s also blazing new trails with a set of stunning Moldovan whites that’ve gone gangbusters. We can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve next.
-
Serena knew from an early age she wanted to follow in the family footsteps… ‘I was 7 years old. Probably as a daughter in love with her dad, it was inevitable :-)’. She’s blossomed into a super-talented winemaker and is making her father proud with every bottle she makes.
-
Angel support helps Serena continue her family legacy, creating wines from the very same patch her grandad farmed years ago - and it’s also giving her the opportunity to discover new, off-the-beaten-track wines like her Moldovan gems. That’s why she’s so grateful and proud to share her kit with UK wine-lovers like you.

Cherry and b currant with spice on ghe nose. All cherry and fresh acidity.
Opened 3 hours prior to go with oxtail stew.
Youthful crimson, with baking spice aroma.
The promise of flavour depth did not eventuate.
Found it altogether far too lean and somewhat ascetic. However, drank it over 2 days. Disappointed!
Really smooth, good body, tasting of plum a vanilla. Not much of a finish, but this went very well with a chicken dinner, as well as on its own!
Simply wonderful. Everything i love in a red from Piemonte and takes me go my happy place
I don't drink much Italian wine, but I was very impressed by this. Style-wise I'd say it's a cross between Northern Rhone syrah (graphite and black fruit) and Tuscan sangiovese (tart cherry). Amazing with homemade pizza with black truffle saucisson.
Just finished the Great Boxing Day Cold Buffet fest. Same wines as yesterday to go with roast goose. Cordero Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC 2021 , non-Naked Hugel Gewurtztraminer Grossi Laue 2012 and Gottlemann Kapellenberg Riesling Berenauslese 2015 to go with pudding.
The Barbera had cranberry and sour cherry flavours with a touch of balsamic vinegar and a marked acidity that cut through the rich fatty goose meat beautifully. It was also excellent with the cold meat and even held its own against pickles.
Enjoy your holiday wine food and company!

I didn’t get much of the Hugel Helen. Very popular with my daughters!

An outstanding experssion of this variety. I have had less that cost more when staying in Monforte de Alba. If an NZ Pinot Noir and a Barolo had a love child, this would be it. Complex interesting, bold and fresh. A hint of tobacco a wave of raspberry and a memory of summer in Piedmont. Superb.
Went well with lamb. drinkable by itself too. I liked it, my wife was less interested. I'd drink it again, but I think it would very much need to be with the right meal.
Lovely and smooth
