A little bit of Connie magic wrapped up in a heavy bottle. If the heavy bottle is because of its density, then the colour of the wine matches that perfectly. The nose is quite potent, giving plenty of hints to its 14.5% abv, yet it isn’t actually alcohol hot. A winter warmer for sure. All of those multitudinous grapes blend and weave their magic under Connie’s guidance into a robust wine which is full of rich fruitiness. There is spice too, of course, and a modest acidity, and although it has a little bit of dryness on the finish it would be very harsh to say it is tannic - interesting, yes, giving the wine backbone, yes, tannic, no. In a way I’m disappointed I didn’t wait until Christmas to enjoy this, but hey hope Christmas can come early can’t it?

Masterful work Dom, where the only problem is that the level of wine in the bottle seems to decrease very rapidly - now I know that in sparkling wines this can be cut to the “Angel’s share” but…. Lovely, juicy and oh so easy drinking with warming tones from the spice accompanying the fruitiness of the wine all wrapped up with a dusting of mokka. Tasty.

Wild Goose Chase Shiraz Viognier 2020

Firstly, let me show you my review of a previous vintage of this wine... “It's a good looker, with a nice nose which is interesting - both fruity and lightly aromatic. In fact I had to double check the abv - 14.5% btw - because it seems lighter than the headline suggests. That no doubt is partly down to the supplementary Viognier to the up-front and personable Shiraz.... Taste and there is the typical spicy punchy Shiraz with its plum essence, maybe a bit of blackcurrant sharpness, even a hint of cherry; and then there is a softer side stepping in and altering the perspective! Now, tbh, this is the second bottle of this tonight, and enjoyed post our nosh to boot - yet this does not need food to shine. It does that already... There is a nice bite of acidity, it isn't OTT, just there and rounds out the taste profile. So does this make this the best ever? Well, maybe not, but it sure is a damn interesting introduction to what Nina can produce!” And now? Amazingly I can relate so well to that review, it is uncanny... it is a lovely drop, and proves that Nina and team can provide a consistent wine of both quality and flavour where from the first sip to the last wrung out tipple just works. Thank you guys!

Cillar de Silos Crianza 2018

Great looking colour, and really really dense too! Rich dark fruit, or should that be really really rich dark fruit if you swill it around your mouth and let it work it’s wonders. This also brings out the tannins, which is understandable post-food, but which went under the radar with our thick pork steaks, with a mushroom, onion, sherry and cream sauce; accompanied by new tats and sugar snap peas with broccoli tonight. ABV- wise it’s an up there 14.5%, but not alcohol hot, just tasty. A bit pricey perhaps, but it is quality, and has been endowed with some great TLC so I am happy. Acidity and balance seem cool too. Really enjoyable.

Quite a potent nose on pouring, and it continues with a potent flavour on tasting too. So nose = tick, fruit = tick, abv = 14.5% aka tick.... The tannins are present but supportive, acidity is nicely balanced, a touch dry on the finish (post-food) but no probs. Overall it’s a really nice wine = tick from me!

Swiftly untracked and swiftly poured - and - nice nose, nice colour too, but that first taste was just amazingly packed with cloves, cloves and more cloves! The emperor couldn’t have had more cloves! Then this flavoursome beast became more complex with something akin to russet apple with sweetness yet a bite of acidity, moving through chocolate and finally towards pepper spiciness - all very naughty, but oh so nice too. I confess to being under FSM’s spell when I try his wines, as I always enjoy the breadth of spice and flavour he provides, and clearly on tonight’s showing he hasn’t lost his touch. Richness, flavoursome, softness enough to snuggle into and give you a toasty glow on a winters night - what’s not to like!

I probably enjoyed this more post food than with our simple salmon steak, asparagus and new tats with home-made tartare sauce meal tonight. I thought it was fine with our meal don’t get me wrong, but there are more nuances coming through now. The nose is fruity and zesty, which happily transfers to the tasting experience. Lemon and pear spring to mind, nice bite of acidity, leading to a dry’ish finish which eggs you on to re-sample - just to be sure, you understand. 😉
