Arco was on the point of going bust in 2020 when the SA wine industry was hit by Covid, just as he was recovering from a battle with cancer. Thankfully, our very own Johan Kruger put him in touch with us, and Angel support helped keep him afloat. Arco’s now sourced and blended this super-premium wine to pay you back while helping out some of his winemaker mates who’ve also been hit hard by Covid.
This classy Syrah comes from the Simonsberg mountain area of Stellenbosch where the higher altitude produces nice slow ripening and gives the wine a great floral character. We'll let Arco explain it to you for himself...
'This is a beautiful Syrah more in the Rhone style, showing a lovely perfumed nose of violets and some lavender, as well as a little white pepper. The palate is more fruit forward than oaky, showing lovely plum and blackberry flavours, finishing with a hint of sweet spice.' Arco Laarman, Winemaker

Whilst visiting my Terra Calda old vine Primitivo vineyards last year, I stumbled across these extra-special old Nero di Troia and Negroamaro vines. I've always loved the varieties from this region, and so I tried something I don't think the Italians have tried before - creating a seriously-special, unique blend.
Working as a team with Naked Wines has given me flexibility and confidence in experimenting with these tiny vineyards, nestled deep South of Puglia. The result is a wine that's intensely deep in colour with elegant aromas of violet, dark chocolate, mocha and spice.
The floral notes follow on to the palate, with dark cherries, blackberries and creamy vanilla notes, with a long lingering finish and firm, but balanced tannins. Still a baby, that will reward those who wait, but given several hours decanted, it opens up well already.

When Sam Plunkett won Naked Winemaker of the Year in 2019, it would’ve been hard to pick a more popular winner, he’s the legendary winemaker behind some of our most-popular cult wines and just the loveliest guy you’ll ever meet. His prize for winning was the chance to make a brand-new, unique French Chablis with an Aussie twist in collaboration with Sebastien Christophe, our Chablis superstar.
They set out to create something that respected all the great traditions of Seb’s classic kit, but with a sprinkling of Sam’s Aussie sunshine to make a more flavourful and fragrant wine that still felt like a classy and elegant Chablis. This little ripper has that clean crisp and citrusy zing you’d expect from a Chablis wine but with the added tropical notes of peach, melon and grapefruit you’d expect down under. Delish.
It’s all the more remarkable because this wine nearly didn’t get off the ground. A few months after winning his prize, lockdown hit and Sam was stuck in Oz, unable to go to France and help with the hands-on making of the wine. Thankfully, Sam and Seb speak the same language as super-passionate winemakers and right from the start they had a shared vision. With Seb's hard-work in the winery, and Sam giving his input via many video calls, they’ve delivered exactly what they set out to do.
