About the wine
A bright and lively white wine from one of the most sought after plots in Austria
- Herbert’s newest Grüner Veltliner is one of his most exciting yet, hailing from a very special plot in the Austrian Weinviertel region. Although this is a white wine, you’ll find that this bottle has a lively fizz to it. Decant and then gently shake your wine before drinking and you will be rewarded richly!
- Kalkvogel is Herbert’s top location to work with. Here his vines grow on idyllic south facing slopes with pure sandstone soils, which makes Herbert's job an incredibly easy one. The grapes need barely any intervention in the winery - they bring bags of purity and refinement to the glass all on their own.
- This doesn’t mean that Herbert can just pop his feet up however. His vines are farmed biodynamically so the deep, lively flavours of the grapes can really shine through. There is a natural smokeyness to this wine, effortlessly offset by delightful yellow stone fruit flavours.

Meet the winemaker - Herbert Zillinger
- Herbert has been at the reigns of his family estate in the Weinviertel (Austria's most sought after winemaking region) since he was just twenty. Another twenty years on and he's one of the most sought after Veltliner producers in the world, grabbing the interest of big shot wine critics like Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson.
- Dedicated to the sustainability of his wines, Herbert uses biodynamic farming to make sure he's feeding back into the land rather than purely taking from it. It's all about keeping it natural and ignoring passing fads. You won't catch Herbert compromising his style for anyone.
- He lets the land set the trends for him, creating sophisticated natural wines that speak to the robust structure and bright zippy flavours that make Weinviertel wines so vibrant and distinctive.

This bottle goes on the treat list for the price. Loved the slight fizz and the colour. Drank without food firstly then we finished the bottle paired with fish. Could taste the fruitness on both ocassions and did not find it too dry.
Very tasty but on the expensive side.
This is a wine that needs some love to enjoy. It's certainly a marmite wine, but I do like it. As mentioned by others, do decant and give a shake before trying. There is some fizz when pouring, so shaking helps release the fizz.
The wine itself is interesting. It has a cloudy, deeper yellow colour. Medium(-) body. The intensity on the nose is bordering medium. Notes of starfruit, mango, yellow apple, pear, lime, and peach. Medium acidity and long finish.
We're having Cod tonight and I have three options, two being M&S (spending my Xmas voucher) Gavi or a Georgian Mtsvane Kakhuri or Zillinger Kalkvogel Organic 2020

A while since I had the kalkvogel but not sure how well the strong apples would go with cod. Make sure you give it a good shake and decant though if you go with it Paul

I had Cod Loin, egg-washed and panko breadcrumbed (twice), then pan-fried and served with peas and home-baked chips earlier - I paired this with Benjamin Darnault's Picpoul de Pinet 2022, Paul. I found this a pretty good match too.👍

There was no mention of dizziness on the bottle or the need to shake it. We did decant it and noticed the cloudiness, the taste was unpleasant.
We certainly noticed the fizz and the slight cloudiness. However we did not enjoy the taste at all.
A very special white wine. We bought this as a treat, looking forward to trying a new wine and we were not disappointed. Loved the slight fizz, and the beautiful colour.
The fruity taste was still lovely and dry and I can’t wait to try this another time with food - loving the idea to match with spicy food.

Paul, thank you so much for picking our Saperavi for your red wine choice, we appreciate it!
This red wine has a distinct personality, it is a single vineyard handcrafted wine, fermented on a wild yeast, faithfully expressing terroir and vintage year. That’s why I love it so much!
My suggestion is to pair it with meat dishes or aged cheese! Decant it, (wine would open more and will show complexity ) and serve at 16-18C. I hope you enjoy and looking forward to your feedback! cheers 💙🥂
