About the wine
Super premium single vineyard Shiraz from a cool, up-and-coming Aussie region
-
When we asked Sam what type of wine he’d make if he could pull out all the stops, he told us he’d love to do a special cool climate Aussie Shiraz, like the styles he grew up on, made using high-end grapes from a single vineyard and barrel matured for extra complexity. We were licking our lips at the sound of it, so we gave Mr Shiraz the thumbs-up, and this wine was born.
-
Sam pinpointed Australia's up-and-coming Upper Goulburn region as his starting point for making this wine. It’s one of the country’s chilliest winemaking spots, where cool, crisp evenings offset long days with plenty of sunshine, to produce high-quality wines of incredible elegance and purity. The single vineyard he used was Yarradindi, whose vines produced an incredible low yield of fruit, to give this wine an impressive, concentrated character. Finally, it was aged for a year and a half in posh French and American oak barrels, to round out the flavours and soften the tannins beautifully.
-
Pour yourself a glass and sniff, and you’ll be met with enchanting aromas of sweet red berries and blackcurrant, and a mint and eucalypt character that stands out among many fine Aussie wines. There’s a sweet spice note from the time spent maturing in the barrel too. On the palate it’s elegant and smoky… very smart and very satisfying. Soft enough to enjoy straight away, this little ripper will only build in complexity over the next few years in the bottle.

Food match
Sam has a cracking food recommendation for this wine... "Felix (our 21 YO son) and his wonderful girlfriend Stella were at home last week. Stella made an amazing vegetarian lasagne with 4 kinds of mushroom, a little bit of chilli and lots of salty cheese. It's a complicated 3 hr masterpiece so I'll point you to a google search of Yotam Ottolenghi's Spicy Mushroom Lasagne. If you have the time, this umami wonder and a glass of the Yarradindi Shiraz will change your life!"

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Sam Plunkett
- Legend is a word we sometimes overuse, but in Sam's case, it's true. Over in Oz he’s regarded as one of their greatest living winemakers. Getting on for a thousand medals and trophies to his name, including the daddy of them all – the Best Shiraz in Australia Trophy at the 2010 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
- Yet if you met him, you’d probably mistake him for the gardener. He’s one of the most down-to-earth, approachable blokes you’ll ever meet. He wears a beat-up old hat and drives a beat-up old pick up, and when he’s not in the vineyard, you’re likely to find him up a ladder with a wrench in his hand.
- From being in a pretty sticky situation back in 2011 when he was unexpectedly bought-out by his business partner, Sam has just achieved his lifetime dream; he’s converted an old textile factory into his very own gleaming high-tech winery and it’s all thanks to Angel funding!

Another good single vineyard Shiraz from Sam Plunkett but I didn't enjoy this one as much as Forest Hut or Whitegate. That's probably more down to personal taste; I prefer the fruit-led flavours of FH and WG, whereas Yarradindi is drier, with a more mature flavour profile.

Excellent full bodied Shiraz. Perfect paired with grilled steak and a Stilton cheese sauce, along with some roasted veg. We really enjoyed it.

I believe that this is the best of Sam Plunketts Shiraz wine that I have tasted to date. I found it does need to breathe, but worth waiting for. Lovely deep fruity spicey tones, yet with a clean edge to it without it being too sharp. I feel this is an excellent wine to serve with dinner because it has the element of dark but lighter edge which makes it easy to drink a glass or two whilst eating. I'm quite certain it would age very well.

It’s an interesting and well made wine but for us it just didnt hit the spot. We really like Sam’s Big Reds so this was a little light for our pallette but still extremely well made. If you like a medium bodied red its worth giving thsi wine a go.

A classy Victoria shiraz has been one of my favourite reds since visiting the Melbourne area 25 years ago and was not disappointed with Sams Yarradindi Vineyard Shiraz. Starts with an inviting dark blackberry nose with hints of eucalyptus and cedar and after a lengthy decant, a relatively young cassis is revealed packed full of sweet loganberry, bramble and blackcurrant with undertones of vanilla, menthol and pine. Certainly worth keeping for a few years in cellar conditions and was one of my January sale picks.
