About the wine
Sam's sublime single vineyard Shiraz
- This is a big wine not to be taken lightly! A deep magenta in the glass with aromas of plum, dark berries, chocolate and raisins along with earthy hints and pepper, all combined to give layer upon layer of plush aromatic complexity. Be sure to decant to appreciate its full effect.
- The grapes for this wine are hand-grown and picked by Tait Hamilton from his vineyard in Heathcoate, on the border of the Mount Camel Ranges. Tait’s vineyard grows magnificent fruit, and it’s a pleasure to make wine from the best grapes.
- It’s pretty straight forward to make a good wine with fantastic fruit like this… but to show at its best it needs good (read expensive) new oak barrels. Bondholder funding helped me to buy the luxury oak which takes this wine to the next level. The funding is only part of the story, NW also links us to wonderful Angels which gives the wine a home.
Sam, Winemaker
Best before
I happily drink this wine as a youngster - I love the combination of plushness and brightness on the palate, the intensity of flavour, and the balance. But with its crazy low pH, and the great intensity of flavour this wine has an impressive ability to age.

Food match
We have a great butcher in Avenel, and ideally we'd have a piece of aged beef from Scotty to go with this Shiraz. I'm a ho-hum cook (unlike my amazing wife Bron), but am okay around the barbecue. I really like beef off the kamado smoker/barbeque (I had to look up what this sort of barbie is called, the best known brand is the Big Green Egg) with some hickory on the coals - the wood smoke is a lovely match for the sweet smokey oak character in Tait's Shiraz. Am looking forward to the end of lockdowns and getting around the barbie with friends family and some delicious Tait Hamilton 2020 Shiraz!

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Sam Plunkett
- Legend is a word we sometimes overuse, but in Sam's case, it's true. Over in Oz he’s regarded as one of their greatest living winemakers. Getting on for a thousand medals and trophies to his name, including the daddy of them all – the Best Shiraz in Australia Trophy at the 2010 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
- Yet if you met him, you’d probably mistake him for the gardener. He’s one of the most down-to-earth, approachable blokes you’ll ever meet. He wears a beat-up old hat and drives a beat-up old pick up, and when he’s not in the vineyard, you’re likely to find him up a ladder with a wrench in his hand.
- From being in a pretty sticky situation back in 2011 when he was unexpectedly bought-out by his business partner, Sam has just achieved his lifetime dream; he’s converted an old textile factory into his very own gleaming high-tech winery and it’s all thanks to Angel funding!

Beautiful. Rich, dark and heavy. A little ‘jammy’ without being too sweet. Flavours of berries.

Sam Plunket encouraged me to try this wine while it was still young to appreciate it's bright intensity, when I mentioned I had brought some to lay down. It turns out he was right again! This is another wine that drinks so well now that my entire supply has been depleted.

Another bold and fruity Shiraz from Sam Plunkett. Aromas of blackberry and black cherry, plus a subtle menthol note. Dark fruits on the palate; blackberry, blueberry and plum jam, with a touch of dry earthiness in the finish. Medium-full bodied and with a long, dark fruit aftertaste. Good flavour concentration and moderately high acidity.
It's hard not to compare this wine with the other single vineyard Shiraz I've tried from Sam; namely Whitegate and Forest Hut. This Shiraz isn't quite as fruit-driven as Whitegate, and has less vanilla sweetness in the finish. It has a subtle mentholic note, but not as noticeable as that in the Forest Hut. It's probably the driest of the three, but not by much. All three of them are top quality Shiraz and worth the money. I think my rank would be 1. Forest Hut, 2. Whitegate, 3. Tait Hamilton, but others could well disagree as there's clear variance between the three, so a lot is down to personal taste. I've given this 4.5 hearts despite it being my 3rd choice, so that's an indicator of the quality level.
I already have a bottle of the 2021 vintage, which I'm sure will be great. Not sure if I'll buy again after that, simply because Sam has a couple of others for the same price that I slightly prefer.

Another belter from Sam.I won’t be happy until I’ve been through all of his single vineyard Shiraz. White gate and 1919 currently in the cellar.Cheers!
