Market Price
To show you the value you're getting as an Angel...
We regularly benchmark a selection of our wines against up to three comparable wines on the market. The Market Price is based on the price of those wines.
What do we mean by benchmark? We taste them blind against our own wines, or we use our market knowledge (over 40 years between us) to set an industry standard Market Price.
If you buy one of our wines and disagree with the Market Price, or it's not your cup of tea, we'll add a credit to your account. For more info, see our FAQS.

About the wine
Sam jumped at the chance to make this super-rare Shiraz from 100-year-old vines
-
I'd made wine from old vines for clients before, but never had access to fruit from seriously old vines myself. I got a call from Peter Booth at Taminick Cellars who asked if I was interested in some fruit from his family’s Shiraz block planted in 1919. I jumped at the opportunity - and thank you Naked and Ray for backing me to do so.
-
Making wine from old vine fruit is fascinating - firstly to be thinking about and respectful of the work and aspirations of past generations who planted, loved, and kept these vines in production. Also there is excitement about the intense flavour and quality of tannin which is a feature of old vine reds.
-
The wine is full bodied but not a monster, with an unusual freshness and extraordinary length on the palate. It has deep ruby red colour and pretty red fruit aromatics including red currants along with a black pepper note and a suggestion of rosemary. There is also a sweet spice note from time in oak barrels. The tannins have a fineness to them. It can be enjoyed now, but if people can bear to put it away, I hope a few of these bottles make it to a decade old for some real wow!

"To quote Matt Voissey (cellarhand with us, and in a previous life a chef)... this wine would be bangin' with lamb! Matt says... stab holes in a lamb shoulder and jam in some garlic and rosemary into the holes. Perhaps a bottle of red wine (in truth he said it doesnt have to be very good!) and some chopped up root veggies in the bottom of the pan. Sit the lamb on top of the veggies, a decent grind of salt and pepper, cover it in baking paper, then a lid a foil over the top and into the oven for a long slow (12-16 hour) roast."

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Sam Plunkett
- Legend is a word we sometimes overuse, but in Sam's case, it's true. Over in Oz he’s regarded as one of their greatest living winemakers. Getting on for a thousand medals and trophies to his name, including the daddy of them all – the Best Shiraz in Australia Trophy at the 2010 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
- Yet if you met him, you’d probably mistake him for the gardener. He’s one of the most down-to-earth, approachable blokes you’ll ever meet. He wears a beat-up old hat and drives a beat-up old pick up, and when he’s not in the vineyard, you’re likely to find him up a ladder with a wrench in his hand.
- From being in a pretty sticky situation back in 2011 when he was unexpectedly bought-out by his business partner, Sam has just achieved his lifetime dream; he’s converted an old textile factory into his very own gleaming high-tech winery and it’s all thanks to Angel funding!

Silky tannins and luscious fruit, this is a great Shiraz.
Exquisite.

And I should have said, Sam, that a bit of a rebranding might be in order given the prominent “X” on the cap. Sadly, too similar to the branding of a certain formerly South African fascist we know and hate.

This is the best Sam Plunkett Shiraz wine I have tried to date, have been slowly trying the wines listed from different vineyards and this one is superb, smooth and deeply satisfying. Will definitely order it again, great to share with friends.

Another great single vineyard Shiraz from Sam. I've been comparing my notes on the ones I've tried and would say this one is most similar to Whitegate, due to its full body and rounded fruit flavours. Probably the most tannic of them all but in a good way. I also think this may have the most ageing potential out of all the Shiraz I've tried from Sam's range.

My better half hasn't been enjoying red wine for at least a year, and this has broken the trend - she loved it! It's got lovely fresh red fruits in there, but satisfying wood and tobacco on the nose. We'll be back for more Plunkett!
