About the wine
Indulgent and alluring, drinking Elia's ultra-refined Montalcino tastes like striking gold
- You don’t need to be a certified wine buff to know that this elegant, refined red is something really rather special - with its assertive character and warming spicy notes, this is the kind of drop you stash away to enjoy on high days and holidays.
-
Deep and intense, Elia’s Brunello is up there with the greatest of Sangiovese with it’s decadent nose of alluring lavender and spicy tobacco.
-
The palate is immediately silky soft and devilishly rich with indulgent flavours of dark chocolate, ripe black cherries and violets, all supported by a firm structure, and long sumptuous finish.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Elia Palazzesi
-
We first tried Elia’s Brunello di Montalcino at a London tasting event and it was so incredibly fresh and elegant that we decided to secure a share for Angels right there and then.
-
His winery is a family affair that’s developed over generations. The land was bought by his great-grandfather in the late 19th century, first farmed by his grandfather, and the very first vines were planted by Elia’s dad in the 1970s. Under Elia’s tutelage, the old family farm has been devoted 100% to grape-growing and become an incredible source of top-quality, organic Montalcino.
-
Elia's been making wines for over 30 years now and he still does much of the work in the vineyard himself. He looks tough when he’s all togged up in his green army t-shirt and khaki pants. But behind that facade he’s an absolute sweetheart and passionate family man who simply loves to make people happy with his wines.

Bought this wine for a special occasion and the family all enjoyed it with Christmas dinner. A very smooth wine; I didn't notice the tannins at first, as they were so soft, but they certainly left a grippy feel on the teeth. The flavours are a good balance between rich fruits and the more developed notes of oak, chocolate and a soft hint of tobacco. Can be enjoyed with food but I actually appreciated it more before and after the meal. This is more than I would normally spend on a bottle of wine but for a special occasion, it's worth it.
Pale purple coloured with rounded high tannins, a full body, high acidity, and dryness. Ripe red cherry and black cherry flavours, with black plum, and a touch of blueberry, with leather, vanilla, and some coffee notes. Balanced with plenty of body, and a roundness on the palate, and some nice complexity of flavour. A very nice wine.
Absolutely beautiful red.
As per the recommendation on the wine’s page I gave this a long decant. Heady aromas tested my willpower.
Although it’s seven years old, it’s drinking like a young wine, with prominent (but not harsh) tannins and acidity. As a result I think it’s best consumed with food. I paired it with roast pork, and it worked very well.
A deliciously complex wine that has good ageing potential.
The wine's page suggests a 7-8 hour decant, so I leapt into action just after noon and decanted this evening's Elia Palazzesi Brunello di Montalcino 2017. The aromas have been tantalizing me all afternoon. Not long to go....
Enjoy your evenings, everyone.
