We regularly benchmark a selection of our wines against up to three comparable wines on the market. The Market Price is based on the price of those wines.
What do we mean by benchmark? We taste them blind against our own wines, or we use our market knowledge (over 40 years between us) to set an industry standard Market Price.
If you buy one of our wines and disagree with the Market Price, or it's not your cup of tea, we'll add a credit to your account. For more info, see our FAQS.

About the wine
Diego's delicious Tierra Alta Reserva is like old-school Bordeaux with a bit of New World flair
-
Few UK wine drinkers have tasted Uruguayan wines before, but even fewer will have tasted anything like Diego’s eye-opening Tannat-based wines.
-
This little beauty is his Merlot-Tannat blend. And it’s a LOT fruitier than you might imagine. Tannat is classically inky and dark, but the blending in of Merlot has softened and made it more approachable. Aroma wise it smells like summer pudding, with red and black berry fruit, a little bit of mint. So pretty on the nose.
-
The palate is also lighter than you’d expect from a Tannat blend, with good acidity giving it a freshness and plenty of red crunchy fruit. This could almost be a sofa red wine. There’s a nice earthiness that comes through on the finish - savoury, mushroomy, Bordeaux-like. Crack this open with a nice bowl of tomato-ish pasta and you’ll be pretty happy.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Diego Spinoglio
-
A former architect and great grandson of an Italian winemaker who immigrated to Uruguay in the late 1800s, Diego’s family were part of a huge wave of European grape growers who moved to Uruguay at the end of the 19th century. Many of whom brought with them their favourite grapevines, stashed safely in their luggage to be planted in the new world.
-
Lots of the wineries set up by those families back then are still going strong. Led by new generations like Diego. He grew up among the grapevines and - after a 4 year break to study architecture - came home to dedicate his life to the family craft. And he’s now been making wine for almost 30 years.
-
Uruguay is a wine region like almost no other in South America. Unlike Argentina and Chile, with their arid climates and mountainous vineyards, it’s a tiny country nuzzled up against the fierce Atlantic Ocean. The cooling coastal influences and frequent rains are perfect for producing smooth, plush styles of Uruguay’s signature grape variety - Tannat - which is the basis for many of Diego’s wines.

This is going to be exciting (for me at least), my first Uruguayan wine, the Diego Spinoglio Tierra Alta Reserva 2021. Reviews suggest that it benefits from some breathing time, so I decanted it a couple of hours ago. I'll be going in soon.
Have a good evening, everyone.

It's very good. Intense, and similar to a Bordeaux, but with something distinctive that I can't quite put my finger on. It did need a longish decant, though.

We have had a very nice Uruguayan Tannat from M&S a while ago, but they don't seem to stock it any more sadly.

The mix of Merlot should have lowered the tannin levels from the Tannat, JJ. I am a big fan of high-polyphenol wines. 👍

What a lovely surprise!
It tastes more like 14.5% ABV, but it's only 13%.
The blend: 60% Merlot and 40% Tannat.
We had it with steak pie, mashed potato, broccoli, mashed swede and a rich gravy.
Tasting notes: blackberry, blueberry, blackcurrant, dark cherry, caramel, spice...
It feels as if it's spent time in the best quality oak barrels.
An excellent blend, I'm very impressed!

To expensive for what it is. Naked have other wines at a lower price just as good.
Nice but not quite to our taste. Too much acidity. Quite pricey.
Nice but not quite to our taste. Too much acidity.
More of an older style red, quite tannic. Suits my taste.
Patience is required for the wine to expand its virtues. In my opinion 24 hours at room temperature and decant. Previous experience : if after opening you can not smell its bouquet it will take a while. Similarly a finger of wine in a glass on opening doesn’t have you smiling from ear to ear then patience, patience!
