From a thousand hectares of Tempranillo, Carlos picked his top 1% to make this very special Selección Especial Rioja

If there’s one winemaker you’d trust to make a first-class Rioja with mature fruity flavours and a silky mouthfeel, it’s Carlos Rodriguez. So when he sent us a one-off Selección Especial made using his very best grapes, we got really excited. This top-shelf Spanish red takes the rich fruit and smooth mouthfeel of a classic Rioja and lifts it up a notch.

2017 was a once-in-a-blue-moon type harvest which left Carlos with a low-yield but super high-quality batch of Tempranillo. Even better, the grapes for this wine come from some of the top vineyards in Rioja, where all the posh brands get their fruit. This wine was made with the cream of Carlos’ crop, his top 1% of grapes from the thousands of hectares he has access to.

This full-bodied red was originally destined for Spanish restaurants but when Covid hit, Carlos had a rare opportunity to treat his Angels to a special wine. It’s one to savour with your eyes and nose before you drink it, to enjoy its dark fruity aromas of ripe berries. And in the mouth it’s full and bold, coating your tongue with lashings of generous fruit, a dash of spice and nutmeg from the oak and a smooth glossy finish.

Meet the winemaker - Carlos Rodriguez

Carlos is a highly-respected consultant oenologist, which means he travels all over Spain making other people’s wines taste delicious. He always dreamed that he could start his own winery and make wines with his name on the bottle but he was never able to raise the funds, and he used to joke that he’d need to take a gun to a bank to get the cash he needed!

That all changed in 2010, when someone forwarded our email to Carlos. We were looking for young, talented, Spanish winemakers to fulfill their potential and make wines for us. So he sent us some samples and we loved them so much, we asked him to hop on the next plane to come see us. At first, he thought he was joining a sect when he heard about Angels and Archangels, but the more he heard, the more he liked. And the rest is history…
