About the wine
Tao is treating you to an exclusive taste of the most stunning fruit in Rioja
- With his super-contemporary Edición Limitada, Tao is taking an exciting new look at Rioja. He’s selected wines from the best, low-yielding vines in the small wine growing region of Alavesa - and we reckon he’s landed on one of the best kept secrets in the wine world.
- The grapes grown here are notoriously intense and complex thanks to their low-yields, and are often featured in top Rioja Reservas. But it's increasingly difficult to get your hands on these kinds of grapes, as artisan growers in Alavesa struggle to fend off developers keen to rip up these precious vines and sell off the land.
- Your support has given Tao the confidence to buy up these grapes and forge long term contracts with their growers, giving you access to some of Rioja’s most stunning fruit. He’s selected historic parcels in the highest villages of Alavesa, giving this wine distinctive deep and complex cherry and mint aromas. There’s plenty of exotic fruit expression, with inky and herbal notes complementing the bright black fruit.

Food match
I am not a huge believer in prescribing food pairings, I think it is best to just try and see what works, so often one finds surprising combinations that are just brilliant! Artelan Reserva Especial is a very versatile food wine and great for tapas. Because it has good concentration and firm but fine tannins it is of course a classic option for grilled or roasted meat, both white and red. But the wine has the elegance, freshness, and precision to go with some more less obvious pairings, like fish stews, grilled octopus, pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces, tortilla de patatas and of course a good chuleta.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Tao Platon
-
As a youngster, Tao Platon took a leap of faith when he swapped his degree in Chemistry for Oenology - not knowing what to expect - but science’s loss was winemaking’s gain, as Tao discovered a true passion that he could dedicate his life to.
-
After finishing his studies, Tao travelled the globe to work harvests in some of the world’s most famous wine regions, including Bordeaux, New Zealand, the Spanish Douro and Burgundy, where he learnt all about different winemaking techniques and approaches. A true student of his craft, he never stopped learning and to this day, when he’s not in the vineyard, you can normally find Tao swotting up for his next big wine test.
-
With a wealth of experience, meticulous attention to detail, and a special appreciation for unique and rare parcels of fruit, Tao now makes exquisite fine wines in select vineyards all over his Spanish homeland. Your support has given him the opportunity to save more small patches of overlooked grapes and turn them into first-rate nectar.
