Your new Cachapoal queen of Carmenere
-
As a child of Chile’s bountiful Cachapoal Valley, Marcela Chandia always dreamed of making her very own wine using the region’s ‘exquisite’ grapes. And after a globetrotting education in wine which saw her hone her craft in New Zealand, South Africa, France, Portugal and the USA (phew!) she finally returned home to realise her dream in 2015.
-
Nestled in between the iconic Maopo and Colchagua Valley regions, Cachapoal flies a little under the radar compared to its more famous neighbours. But talented winemakers like Marcela are beginning to shine a spotlight on this up-and-coming region, with the potential to produce high-quality, fine Chilean wines for a snip.

Your new Queen of Carmenere, Marcela is a passionate champion of Chile’s flagship grape variety. In fact, it was the very first wine she made when she began her solo project back in 2015. She loves it for its potential to create wonderfully complex, vibrant, and velvety-smooth wines. And we reckon you’ll love hers for the exact same reason.

Marcela Chandia's Story
Marcela's Story
I am an Agronomist-Winemaker with 20 years making wines in Chile and 5 other countries: New Zealand, South Africa, France, Portugal and the USA. In 2015 I founded my own project called Chile diVino.
At the beginning of my career, when I studied to be an Agronomist, I wanted to be a Viticulturist. Having done a vintage in a wine cellar, to find out what winemakers wanted in grapes, I fell in love with what it is to make wines. A large percentage of the quality of the wines is in the grape, so I decided to do a Postgraduate degree in Oenology and make wines in different parts of the world.
I love being able to transmit in my wines the place where they come from. I enjoy that through the years I keep learning about making wines and their terroirs. I love to see how people enjoy the wines I make, accompanying them in the moments of their life.
In my wines I try to convey what Chile is, its richness and diversity. I make wines that have my personality, happy, outgoing. I love making wines, and I pass that love and part of my heart on to the wines I make.
I love all the varietals, but Carmenere is very special to me, because is like our Chilean flagship. It has a wonderful complexity, very fruity, velvety tannins, perfect to accompany a wide range of meals. My style is to make vibrant, delicate and seductive wines.
My greatest joy was definitely when I made the first wines of my personal project, Chile diVino. To be able to realize a dream that I always had. When my first wines were released, and I could see how people were enjoying it, that fills me with joy and keeps me going with what I love to do.
Making wines alone is very expensive, I have had to ask a significant amount of money from the bank to fulfill my dream, since to make high quality wines requires high quality grapes and barrels. With the help of you, I can make other wines, and continue to expand my project. Always grateful…You mean everything to me!
