Not many winemakers have a family history as rich as Alexandre’s. The Malet-Roqueforts have been making some of the most sought-after wines in the world at their historic St Emilion estate since the 18th century, where they’re the oldest established family in the entire region. In fact, their fame dates all the way back to the start of the last millennium, when a great display at the Battle of Hastings won favour, and a fiefdom, from William the Conqueror.

Alexandre's Story
The history of the Malet-Roquefort family is inextricably linked to the history of France.
After brilliant feats at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, by both father and son, William the Conqueror ennobled the Malets and granted them a fiefdom. The family then divided into 3 branches, one of which settled in Aquitaine. One of the Malets married in the 17th century, with his wife bringing the property of la Gaffelière as a dowry. Since that time, the family has lived at the Château.
It is the oldest-established family in St Emilion.
Today, Alexandre now manages five properties, in close relation with his family: Château Armens bought in 1999 (St Emilion Grand Cru), Château Chapelle Aliénor acquired with his wife Aliénor in 2001 (Bordeaux Supérieur), Château La Connivence (Pomerol) bought with his friend Johan Micoud, former international footballer, Chateau Puyblanquet in 2020 ( Saint Emilion Grand Cru) and Château La Gaffelière (1er Grand Cru Classé-St Emilion).
​​In the beginning, there was Château La Gaffelière, which Count Léo de Malet Roquefort (Alexandre’s father) inherited in 1958 on the death of his own father, Louis Alexandre. The Malet-Roquefort family has been linked to Château La Gaffelière in Saint-Emilion since the 16th century
After an experience as a cellar master in Argentina, Alexandre settled in the Gironde. He represented a new generation of winegrowers.
In 1995, he created wine merchant “Maison Malet Roquefort”, specialising in Bordeaux grands crus. He sold it in 2015, to concentrate entirely on the family properties.
In parallel, he acquired Château Armens (Saint Emilion Grand Cru) and developed the property with the help of a new technical team.
In the 2000s, Alexandre, with his experience gained at Armens, suggested to his father that he should participate actively at la Gaffelière, to completely renovate it. With the help of Alexandre, Léo then undertook some major investments.
In 2010, Alexandre joined La Gaffelière fully, and continued the in-depth work that he had initiated himself in the vineyard and cellar.
The prestigious vineyard has been classified as a 1er Grand Cru since 1954.
