About the wine
It's all natural... this Veltliner has the critics talking
- This is some of Herbert's most exclusive stuff made from Austrian Grüner Veltiner grapes, grown in a single vineyard the locals refer to as Ried Weintal. Grüner Veltiner is a real up-and-comer that already had wine critics peering over their spectacles, but combined with the unique conditions of Ried Weintal, Herbert has made something really rather exceptional.
- This wine focuses on celebrating the land it was grown from, using only the most natural processes to create the unvarnished style Herbert revels in. Nothing is added, nothing removed. Herbert lets the grapes do all the talking, working closely with the soil and the vines during the growing process, before taking a step back once the wine hits the cellar.
- With such a rich profile of flavours tightly curled into each bottle, this wine will enjoy a little time to unfurl and open up. Decant or crack open the bottle well before serving to reveal a golden, rounded mouthfeel, with bright flavours of quince, golden delicious apples, white pepper meeting ripe toasty notes of baked apples and pear.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Herbert Zillinger
- Herbert has been at the reigns of his family estate in the Weinviertel (Austria's most sought after winemaking region) since he was just twenty. Another twenty years on and he's one of the most sought after Veltliner producers in the world, grabbing the interest of big shot wine critics like Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson.
- Dedicated to the sustainability of his wines, Herbert uses biodynamic farming to make sure he's feeding back into the land rather than purely taking from it. It's all about keeping it natural and ignoring passing fads. You won't catch Herbert compromising his style for anyone.
- He lets the land set the trends for him, creating sophisticated natural wines that speak to the robust structure and bright zippy flavours that make Weinviertel wines so vibrant and distinctive.

A very nice Gruner Veltliner and a beautiful accompilment to fish or light meat (chicken, veal or pork) meals
Opened this Zillinger Ried Weintal Gruner Veltliner 2018 . I had a Bottle same time last year and left this another year and it’s all the better for it. Happy Sunday night everyone. 😀
An interesting wine and nice to try something different, but not to my taste and so wouldn’t get again.
Really disappointed with this wine.
We had ordered the Carmen Stevens Chenin blanc 2021, but for some reason it was replaced with this bottle instead.
As soon as we poured it the wine had an unusual golden colour more like a dessert wine but with a strange musty smell and a sour taste that just didn’t go well with our food.
Definitely wouldn’t get this again (not that I chose it in the first place)
I wondered if it was just a one off but looking at the reviews I’m not the only one with this opinion.
I love an Austrian white and am a big fan of Gruner Veltliner, however, this one was not one of my favourites unfortunately. I think it was a good bottle of wine and in fairness I think that I pretty much did the damage myself by pairing it with the wrong food but I found this one just a bit too bold in its flavour and not crisp enough for what I paired it with. This is a wine that kicks a real fruity punch and as such I think should be paired with something equally as powerful. I will buy again and try to get it right next time.

I’m amazed at the negative reviews: this is a lovely wine. A beautiful colour and a complex white. Not like other Gruner Veltliners we’ve tried and none the worse for that.

Couldn’t be sure if this was off or not. It was really not right. Tasted like ham.
But I’ve reported this as not right so honestly could have been just the bottle we had.
