Market Price
To show you the value you're getting as an Angel...
We regularly benchmark a selection of our wines against up to three comparable wines on the market. The Market Price is based on the price of those wines.
What do we mean by benchmark? We taste them blind against our own wines, or we use our market knowledge (over 40 years between us) to set an industry standard Market Price.
If you buy one of our wines and disagree with the Market Price, or it's not your cup of tea, we'll add a credit to your account. For more info, see our FAQS.

About the wine
Top-drawer Shiraz from the man who won Best Shiraz in Australia
- When you voted for me to make the Shiraz of my dreams, I was absolutely over the moon. I didn't need asking twice - so with your support, I set out to secure some seriously special fruit from an award-winning family vineyard I've been working with for years.
- The Whitegate vineyard is elevated above sea level - the cooler temperature means a longer growing season which really maxes the fruit’s flavour, resulting in something really quite special.
- I broke all the rules with this one, and the result has blown me away. It’s insanely delicious – rich and powerful yet velvety smooth to drink. It's a one-off wine that was a serious treat for me to make, and I hope, a serious treat for you to enjoy!

Meet the winemaker - Sam Plunkett
- Legend is a word we sometimes overuse, but in Sam's case, it's true. Over in Oz he’s regarded as one of their greatest living winemakers. Getting on for a thousand medals and trophies to his name, including the daddy of them all – the Best Shiraz in Australia Trophy at the 2010 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
- Yet if you met him, you’d probably mistake him for the gardener. He’s one of the most down-to-earth, approachable blokes you’ll ever meet. He wears a beat-up old hat and drives a beat-up old pick up, and when he’s not in the vineyard, you’re likely to find him up a ladder with a wrench in his hand.
- From being in a pretty sticky situation back in 2011 when he was unexpectedly bought-out by his business partner, Sam has just achieved his lifetime dream; he’s converted an old textile factory into his very own gleaming high-tech winery and it’s all thanks to Angel funding!

This was a gorgeous example of a Shiraz - deep, dark in the glass & a power punch on the tongue! Very nice!

So this was actually the 2015, stored and drunk in 2025. No way of reviewing that one!!!. It was awesome.

Found this a bit thin and sharp for a Shiraz. Disappointing.

This evening I've opened one of Sam Plunkett's excellent single vineyard shirazes, the Sam Plunkett Whitegate Vineyard Shiraz 2020. I've enjoyed several previous vintages, so I 'm looking forward to this.
Have a good evening, everyone.

Enjoying a real beauty of a wine tonight - Sam Plunkett Whitegate Vineyard Shiraz 2020. Actually the 2019 vintage, this has been a favourite of mine since trying it on the tasting tour a couple of years ago. I actually had the 2020 vintage first and am now tracking back; happy to say the extra time in the bottle has done no harm at all.
This wine is very classically Shiraz. Lots of dark fruit aromas; blackberries, blueberries, plums and some tart black cherry. There's a smooth vanilla note too and the time in bottle has made the tannins silky soft. Full-bodied but not in any way cloying, with a good bite of acidity in the finish and a very subtle hint of the peppery aftertaste sometimes associated with Shiraz.
Great way to relax after my last full week of work for 2024.

This is a special wine. I wish I’d kept it for Christmas Day! the The reviews were good and they weren’t wrong. Tasting notes say dark chocolate and blackberry and you get both straight away, especially the blackberry. In the top two wines I”ve tasted this year. I just wish I’d bought more than one. Expensive, but worth the money.

I did, for the last time this year (probably).
Firstly, new vintages of some regular purchases:
Sam Plunkett Whitegate Vineyard Shiraz 2020
Bellesa Perfecta Priorat 2019
Cordero Gavi del Comune di Gavi 2023
Serena Cordero Tris 2023
Some wines I’ve had before but don’t buy regularly:
Dom Maxwell The Bloom 2022
Gerd Stepp Pinot Blanc 2022
Raats Angels Selection Chenin Blanc 2023
You wait ages for a red Burgundy, then three turn up at the same time:
Domaine Jacqueline Frachet Chorey Les Beaune Vieilles Vignes 2021
Domaine Jacqueline Frachet Aloxe Corton 2021
Domaine Jacqueline Frachet Volnay 2021
Next, sheer self-indulgence:
Boschkloof Epilogue 2022
A wine new to me:
Christian Patat Greco di Tufo 2023
Finally, the free bottle:
Scott Peterson ROX Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon Magnum 2022
That’s Christmas sorted (although possibly not New Year). Cheers!
