About the wine
This deep, dark and fruity red shows brilliant Bordeaux doesn't need to cost the earth
-
Edouard’s soft and supple 2016 Reserve Lafite Monteil is proof that you don’t need to break the bank to enjoy super-delicious Bordeaux.
-
Aged beautifully for years in the bottle, it’s a deep, dark wine with great intensity and a long finish. On the nose, you get fresh fruit aromas like soft cherries and brambles, with hints of sweet spice and earthy cedar and flint characteristics. And the palate follows on well with plenty of dried dark fruit too.
-
This is a classy, classic Bordeaux with bags of complexity, yet it’s so easy-drinking you could serve it up to any of your red wine loving friends and never fail to draw rave reviews. And at just £10.49 Angel price, you’re pretty much getting it for pennies on the franc.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Edouard Le Grix de la Salle
-
We’ve been looking for more classic Bordeaux wines for ages, but finding the right winemaker to make them has been like finding a needle in a haystack, so much of the region is dominated by traditional old estates that just don’t fit the Naked mould. Thankfully a tip-off from our Bordeaux rebel Olivier Cazenave led us to Edouard, a 3rd generation winemaker at his family’s Chateau Le Grand Verdus estate, and as soon as we met him we knew we’d found our needle.
-
His name may sound like something out of a French nobleman’s court, and his family estate is practically a castle, but Edouard is actually a really forward-thinking guy who understands the need to balance the new with the old. He’s passionate about organic farming and working with nature, and has been introducing loads of changes in his vineyards to encourage the local wildlife to flourish among his vines “It’s no longer about fighting nature, it will always win. It’s about working with it.”
-
It’s when you taste top-quality stuff like Edouard’s that you understand why Bordeaux is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. From his access to first-class grapes, to his understanding of the technical side of winemaking, to his ability to create uniquely delicious, classic French wines. If you’re a Bordeaux fanatic, Edouard’s is a name to get really excited about.

My wife and enjoyed. This I felt is sound claret. Also we decanted half the bottle about 4hours before seving with our evening meal. Which we do most bottles of red wine which I suspect. Based on the narative from Naked. And the comments left by other Angels. Suggest that it is a wine that benefits from breathing prope
rly. Thisn’t good pop & pour wine I think.
Not sure if the wine was off as tasted vinegary to me
Wartery and sharp
Past its best. Dull wine.
Just to say
I’m with this guy
“ Oh dear. According to the last few reviews, I’m about to taste one of the worst wines ever. A bad batch? Or reviewers who don’t appreciate the complexity of a Bordeaux? I’ll be open minded… On the nose you get a range of fruit: red berries, soft cherry, hedgerow fruits. Also earthy, peppery spice, hint of nettle. Body is on the light side of medium. More spice here, plus leather and tobacco leaf alongside the fruit. Tannin feels like it will pull your mouth inside out. Leaves you with lingering smoky fruit. It sure is intense, and it won’t be for everyone, but there is a lot to like here, with layers of flavour to unlock. Give it a try, folks.”
Unbelievable value. I’ve tasted Bordeaux three times this price , and this is right up there .
You could definitely keep it in the bottle and it would improve even further . Just the sort of discovery that makes Naked worth subscribing to
Much too dry and not at all fruity.
Opened with some trepidation, given the previous reviews. Smooth and deep - very enjoyable.
Tastes just like a cheap French wine and to think when I lived in France this cost about £1.50 a bottle, not for me.
