Sam Linter's Story
Sam Linter's Story
"My parents started the vineyard when I was 4 years old, so I grew up amongst the vines. Not knowing what to do upon leaving school, I decided on a hairdressing apprenticeship and trained to teach hairdressing, but the pull of the vineyard bought me back in 1995.
I became very interested in the wine that my parents were making, and I could see the potential of our vineyard to make world-leading wines, so I started studying as a winemaker in 1996.
There are many things I just love about my job; the creativity, the ability to turn simple grapes into delicious wine, discovering new techniques and developing more interesting flavours, learning from others, and embracing new ideas.
There have been lots of joys and sorrows along the way. We have won many awards; just recently we’ve been awarded a GOLD and a SILVER in the Wine GB Awards, a SILVER in the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships, and two TROPHIES and a SILVER in the Glass of Bubbly Awards. I have to say though, one of our greatest achievements is winning the Zero to Hero Winemaker Award, and of course being the first UK winemaker on Naked Wines.
Sadly, my mother died some years ago, and my father recently, and they were both a major inspiration in starting the vineyard. They worked and cared for the vineyards for many years and started us off to where we are now. Guided by nature – the mild climate and the sandstone soil – they discovered the best varieties of grapes to grow in our eco-system. They were pioneers in the English wine industry, and we all miss them very much.
Just like my parents, we’ve continued to be guided by nature in our approach, and we believe that the more we understand and take inspiration from the nature around us, the more we can appreciate its needs and protect its diversity and beauty for future generations.
Across the whole team at Bolney, I believe that our love and passion for what we do over the past 50 years is what makes our wines so special. We are like a big family, dedicated to making the best wine and ensuring very good attention to detail.
We hope you will enjoy our wines, not just because they are delicious but because they are made with love and care at our family-run Sussex vineyard.”
