A group for tasting and discussion of Naked wines.

We'll pick a topic of discussion far enough in advance to order appropriate wines, then have an online meet-up (using Slack: https://vin-chin.slack.com/ ) on the first Thursday of every month (8-9pm) to discuss the wines.

I'll lead the discussion (unless anybody wants to volunteer for any particular session), basically researching the particular wines and giving an overview before we taste them (or at least, before you admit to it...).

We'll probably choose two wines that everybody would taste, but anybody will be welcome to open something else (not necessarily a Naked wine) and talk about how it works in comparison to the wines we're tasting.

If you want to join in the discussions, send me an email at vin_chin@pointerstop.ca, and I'll send you an invite to Slack

I've got Franck's Herbis at home - was waiting for summer to drink but happy to buy a couple more and partake.

Chardonnay?

New v Old?

Oaked v Unoaked?

Or a combination/variation of those themes (i.e. comparing New World Oaked Chards from different regions/countries and vice versa).

Suggesting because once again, I have a few in haha! Currently have Richard's Elgin, Kruger Chard and David Akiyoshi's. I know Dom Hentall has some great lightly oaked/unoaked examples and there's always Chablis.

Was planning on doing a side by side myself with the three New World wines I have in at the moment, but thought I'd post here to see if there was any interest in doing it via Vin Chin.

i mentioned the Chardonnay options too not so long ago, maybe that could be the tasting in November?
For October, I'd go back to Red, I'd support the Portuguese choice there, but also perhaps something Italian, not sure we've done an Italian tasting yet? Maybe some of Christians splendid Southern Italian choices alongside say Dom Hentall, or we could do North vs South, say Cordero vs Patat (accepting the difference in price points of course)

Sorry, Stephen, I should have checked this BEFORE putting up my most recent post. I am hereby moving my December whites to January... and we'll do some Italian reds for December. I like the idea of Patat and Hentall.

The problem with Chardonnay is price... some of our members skip tastings because they can't afford to place an order. Well, the other problem with Chardonnay is choice. Too darn much of it...

I think a Loire vs New World Chardonnay tasting might go well? Or maybe a Battle of the Southern Hemisphere might work on price points - an Aussie vs SAfrica vs a SAmerican tasting?

Not sure if this is the right group to ask this question but I couldn't see one that I thought was more suitable so here goes

Many of you who've read my tasting notes. Will have noticed I've had a long-standing aversion to both Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon which has always put me doubly in the ABC camp.

Having actually enjoyed the Cabernet Sauvignon in the latest fine wine case, I'm beginning to think that that the time has come to address those aversions, so I'm looking for two recommendations both in the budget. AE sub 12 lb. Range for a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay. As I've always particularly disliked, the intense black cumins and oak in many Cabernet sauvignons a recommendation for one where those flavour notes are not particularly permanent would be appreciated. And additionally, as I've always disliked heavily oaked and intensely vanilla finish Chardonnay a recommendation for either anon oats or lightly oaked one would be appreciated

Hi Tony, my best suggestion for an unoaked Chardonnay would be Dominic Hentall’s Macon Villages. However these days it’s a touch over your ideal budget at £13.99.

His Saint Veran is also excellent and has subtle oak, but that’s more expensive still, so is probably ruled out on those grounds.

Actually another, slightly left field, thought…

Have you considered the Serena Cordero Tris which is a Chardonnay blend? Comfortably within budget at around £8.99 if I remember correctly.

Vin Chin is on hiatus :-(

Now that Naked is finally selling all its wines again… I'm not in the UK for the next three months. I'll try to set something up for December. If anybody else wants to manage a tasting in the meantime — fill yer boots!

Thanks Derek. Patsy and I are just heading off for a couple of months as well, leaving on Wednesday and back early November, so December would be a great time to restart for me.

We're off to France (as you may have guessed!) Are you off to NS? Say hi to Marta from both of us.

Remember, it's part III (Australia) of our Cabernet Sauvignon, tonight at 8

Sorry Derek, my intention had been to buy the wines with this month's freebie but of course Covid-19 intervened and I don't have any of them!

I'll pass this month for once - though I might pop in to Slack briefly and say hello.

I guess June's going to be pretty tricky unless we can find something everyone's got. Of course we could just chat and say hi with whatever we do have.

Hi Derek. I was wondering if we could start at 5 past 8 tonight as we want to go outside and clap for the NHS et al. and I imagine others will too. No problem if not, I'll just join a bit late, I'll probably start Slack and get on to the channel before 8 anyway.

Looking forward to it, chat later.

Are we not moving to Zoom?

Log in to like 5 years ago
Phil Howard-Knight Angel

No indication of that as yet Stephen. Actually I'm torn … Zoom would be good but I use the transcript from Slack to write up my tasting notes afterwards! I'm always behind with my reviews, I currently have about 8 or 9 to do :-(

Up to Derek .. let's suggest it tonight and see what he thinks.

Derek, I am hoping to make it tonight but my daughter is not well so we're not sure what we are doing this evening as a result. We were going out for an early dinner with the grandkids and being back before 8 but things may well change. Still hope to be able to join though but please accept my apologies if I'm don't.

Hi all. Really sorry but can’t make tonight’s tasting. Had to rearrange a few things after mum was in hospital yesterday. Sorry and enjoy!

Very sorry to hear that Rachel, hope your Mum is OK!

Thanks Phil. Replacement pacemaker but as always with mum no procedure is complete without a visit to A&E afterwards! 🤷🏻‍♀️😆
Hope your daughter is okay.

Wines for March through May, 2020.

We're going to break from our usual red/white rotation and due three months of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Starting with March 5, we'll do two Lacaze: Lacaze Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 and Lacaze Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2016. If you feel like getting fancy, you can try Lacaze Simetrico Cabernet Sauvignon 2017.

On April 2, we'll switch to South Africa: Kruger Family Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and Arabella Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018. Because there are no other US Cabernet's currently in stock to compare it to, I'm going to throw in F. Stephen Millier Angels Reserve Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 here!

Finally, May 7 will be Oz: Sam Plunkett Gentle Annie Cabernet 2018 and Jen Pfeiffer The Rebel Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 or Jen Pfeiffer The Diamond Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (you choose)

We did miss you Rachel in fact until I saw your previous post I had planned to PM you today to check you were OK! Glad it was 'only' your iPad though very annoying. I have a not-that-old iPad which now refuses to upgrade its IOS and so no new apps will load and old ones are starting to stop working, so I don't use it for much other than BBC News and Facebook; very frustrating. I'd already had to stop using it for video calls as the front camera packed up. Thinking I'll switch to non-Apple when and if I buy something else.

Hope to chat in June at least, I don't have the wines for May either and can't see things improving in time; what a mess! In fact I might join in May anyway just for the chat.

Technology is not meant to last is it!?
Installed it now on my phone for now.

Derek - please send a new invite before May to a different email address - couldn’t get into my old one when I got this new phone 😆🤷🏻‍♀️. rachkensh@googlemail.com

Joining in May regardless seems like a good idea, Phil - I can chat rubbish and drink wine whilst doing so 😆
Thanks for checking in.
Stay safe and sane out there!
See you in May. X

Er... Rachel, I messaged you in January that Slack was warning your device wouldn't be able to connect if you didn't update slack before end of March...

Aye, you did - and I did an update on the app but doesn’t seem to have made a difference so I think my device just didn’t support the latest version. As I put in an earlier post it won’t even find the app on there to reload.
On my phone for now.
