About the wine
Aussie superstar Sam proves little grapes can pack a big punch
-
The bone dry climate of Central Victoria meant these hardy little grapes were brimming with colour and flavour and Sam knew just what to do to show them at their best.
-
Deep red in colour with a soft tinge of purple, this beautifully balanced wine boasts a sweet and spicy character from the oak, alongside intense aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants.
-
As Sam says, ‘it’s a stylish and sophisticated, full-bodied red that also has a delightful freshness to it. Very classy stuff!’ Anyone else suddenly feeling very thirsty?
Best before
This wine has the fresh acid and highish tannin load which will give it a long life. Its an impressive wine now, but will reward cellaring. Over time the tannins will become softer and extra layers of savoury flavour will develop.
Serving advice
I think serve the Cabernet at 16-18C. In truth I would open the bottle and get straight into it, but if you have the time and patience it will open up a little if left to breath for an hour or two.
Food match
This is a ripper red meat wine. Char grilled steak and a glass of this Cabernet is just the thing for me!
Contains sulphites
Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Sam Plunkett
- Legend is a word we sometimes overuse, but in Sam's case, it's true. Over in Oz he’s regarded as one of their greatest living winemakers. Getting on for a thousand medals and trophies to his name, including the daddy of them all – the Best Shiraz in Australia Trophy at the 2010 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
- Yet if you met him, you’d probably mistake him for the gardener. He’s one of the most down-to-earth, approachable blokes you’ll ever meet. He wears a beat-up old hat and drives a beat-up old pick up, and when he’s not in the vineyard, you’re likely to find him up a ladder with a wrench in his hand.
- From being in a pretty sticky situation back in 2011 when he was unexpectedly bought-out by his business partner, Sam has just achieved his lifetime dream; he’s converted an old textile factory into his very own gleaming high-tech winery and it’s all thanks to Angel funding!
