What do we mean by benchmark? We taste them blind against our own wines, or we use our market knowledge (over 40 years between us) to set an industry standard Market Price.

Getting your hands on a Bacchus of this quality without breaking the bank is normally mission impossible. But Angel funding has allowed Kieron to source premium grapes from across the country - from down in Kent to as far north as Yorkshire - to create an elegant, complex, refreshing white that truly represents the best of British.

The nose is bright and aromatic, with many of the hallmarks of a top Kiwi Sauvignon. Aromas of grapefruit, greengage and gooseberry dominate, with a lovely hint of rhubarb too. The palate has an incredible intensity, delivering waves of citrus fruit flavours from zesty lemon peel to refreshing grapefruit. And underneath it all there’s an impressive focus to the wine - in minerality, intensity and length.

Wines like this show Kieron is serious when he talks about putting England on the map as a country capable of producing some of the best wines in the world. He feels the potential is there. And when you taste his Bacchus for the first time, we think you’ll agree that he’s onto something.

Meet the winemaker - Kieron Atkinson

Angels have been asking us to scout out more English winemakers for as long as we can remember. But we never expected to find one in Derbyshire of all places!

Kieron Atkinson has been quietly making award-winning English wines in Derbyshire for over a decade as chief winemaker at the historic Renishaw Hall, once thought to be the most northerly vineyard in the whole world. In 2011, he founded his very own English Wine Project to help raise the profile and quality of wines across the land. His aim is to put England on the map as a country that can produce wines that are up there with some of the best in the world.

Above all, he’s a really thoughtful, intelligent guy and the quality of his wines is superb. His winery is based in an old cotton mill in the Derwent Valley, in the middle of Derbyshire. But he also travels up and down the country as a consultant, helping other winemakers make their wines better too. It’s all part of his mission to champion the best of English wine. It’s so great to be working with an exciting new English winemaker like Kieron. And he’s so chuffed to be on board and is looking forward to hooking up with Angels.
