Up-and-coming Barossa superstar who grew up at Penfolds and cut his teeth at Henschke
-
Josh is an up-and-coming winemaker with four generations of Barossa grape-growers blood flowing through his veins. From growing up on a Penfolds vineyard to cutting his teeth at Henschke, you could say Australia’s top 2 wineries made him who he is. And what a talent they’ve made.
-
After helping put his family winery on the map, Josh is excited to branch out and make his own wines, with his name on the label. He’s taking a fresh approach to traditional Aussie wines, backed by barrels of passion, industry know-how, and a knack for securing the best parcels of grapes…
-
That’s because he comes with an incredible network of grape-growing buddies. Lots of the guys now running the vineyards around his patch - in the Barossa Valley and Langhorne Creek - are his age. They all went to school together and share an unbreakable bond. And it’s thanks to these relationships that he’s able to get hold of really top-quality fruit to make his wines for you.

Josh Pfeiffer's Story
Josh Pfeiffer's Story
Josh Pfeiffer had an enviable childhood, growing up on Penfolds Kalimna vineyard in South Australia (his father managed the viticulture for Penfolds, including the Grange vineyards).
Grape growing has been part of the Pfeiffer family since Josh’s great grandfather owned a vineyard in the Riverland region of South Australia. The skills and passion to grow pristine grapes were carefully passed down though the generations to Josh and his brother Sam.
But Josh had his heart set not only on growing the grapes, but on making the wine too. Off he went to study winemaking at Adelaide Uni and buckled down to vintages at Peter Lehmann’s, Yalumba and Two Hands, where his talents attracted an offer of the assistant winemaking job.
When an enviable opportunity as an assistant winemaker later opened up at Henschke, Josh jumped in and nabbed it with both hands! He worked in those hallowed halls for 5 years, soaking up priceless knowledge from Stephen and Prue Henschke.
In July 2013, Josh moved back to the family winery, Whistler Wines, and took over the grape-growing and winemaking. He converted the vineyards over to organic practices later that year and then went biodynamic in 2017.
And he’s done a fantastic job! Whistler Wines was voted one of James Halliday's Dark Horse wineries of 2016 and 'Best Small Cellar Door' in the Barossa by Gourmet Traveller Wine 2020. Josh himself has made it into the Top 50 Young Guns of Wine three years in a row.
Now that he's gone fully Naked, you’ll get even more of his fantastic wines - under his own label! He can't wait to meet you all and he hope that you'll be enjoying his wines long into the future.
